Stainless steel and sculpture, a winning combination

Stainless steel and sculpture, a winning combination

The Kelpies, a groundbreaking work of art that can take your breath away.

Standing thirty meters above the ground and weighing approximately 600 tons, they overlook the Forth and Clyde Canals in central Scotland. Engineers, in collaboration with artist Andy Scott, have designed a robust carbon steel structure to install hundreds of polished 316L stainless steel plates, each 1.5 meters long and 6 mm thick, meticulously laser-cut to perfectly cover the sculpture depicting the heads of two horses, a symbol of the work between the canals and the Scottish lands.

The “Kelpies” are undoubtedly among the most striking contemporary artworks in the world!

The sculpture is crafted with inox steel and iron textures, assembled with almost artisanal precision. Special lights placed within the massive structure ensure a highly effective visual effect.
The “Kelpies” thus represent the perfect blend of Scottish traditions, industrial materials, modern techniques, and contemporary art.

The artist describes his choice of stainless steel for the sculpture as follows:

"I chose stainless steel for both its longevity and its visual effect," he says. "The setting is the land of the 'big sky,' with mountains in the distance and special natural light. Stainless steel has achieved the effect I was looking for: a light, almost delicate quality against the natural backdrop."
